Une descente dans les eaux de la Terre vivante
The word cenote comes from the Yucatec Maya ts’onot. It describes the natural limestone wells of Anáhuac. Within Maya sacred geography, a cenote opens into a living earth. The sky, the inhabited surface and the waters beneath it belong to a cosmos whose realms sustain one another. Rain enters the ground and gathers in the depths. Roots draw this nourishment back towards the light. We approach these waters in sacred reverence and prayer, recognising that our lives depend upon what is held deep within.
In the oral tradition of Yucatán, the grandmothers and grandfathers teach that cenotes are sacred portals, sources of life and places of profound spiritual transformation.
The caves are shaped by rain filtering through the earth and by the slow movement of water underground. These waters travel across the peninsula towards the sea, through chambers adorned with stalactites and stalagmites formed over millennia.
Long before the cenotes formed, a meteorite struck Chicxulub sixty six million years ago. The impact brought the age of the dinosaurs to an end. Many cenotes later formed along the buried edge of the crater. Together they trace the Ring of Cenotes, an arc visible from above and held as sacred within these teachings.
