UXMAL: IN THE PRESENCE OF CHAAC AND THE POWER OF THE JAGUAR
At Uxmal, we remember that a prayer for rain cannot end with our own thirst. To visit this place is to enter into reflection on the earth, the celestial cycles, and ancestral knowledge embodied in its architecture. Its geometry and the present energy invite us to consider how human life is bound to the movements of the natural world.
Chaac bears the gift of rain and the force of the storm. His presence is carved into the city’s sacred architecture, including the façade of the Governor’s Palace. These carvings give visible form to the importance of rain in the Puuc region. He is depicted with large bulbous eyes, scrolled ears, and a long, hooked nose curving upwards like a flash into the clouds. In Maya sacred imagery, the axe he raises carries the power of lightning.
Before Chaac, we bow to the power that awakens the maize and sustains our flesh—a blessing entrusted to our hands for a time, never ours to possess. We may receive this moment of encounter as an invitation to reflect on purification, emotional flow, and gratitude for the life-giving sustenance of water. We are bound to tend it with reverence and pass it on undiminished, for its abundance is also the birthright of those yet to come.
Those who made their home here prepared a place for the rain. They built reservoirs and carved chultunes into the limestone, gathering rain water to sustain life throughout the dry season. Their dedication gives substance to the prayer. We cannot ask for the blessing of water while neglecting its care. The offering asks something of the hands that bring it forth.
We pray for the rain that reaches the roots, nourishes the maize, and gives water to still the thirst of the forest creatures. We give thanks for the nourishment through which our ancestors lived and through which we are now alive. What sustains us must also be sustained by our conduct.
