They are considered a sickness of the spirit and a blindness of the heart. In the Maya language, someone who acts from arrogance and vanity is said to have a heart that is swollen or filled with stale air, unable to hold true wisdom.

When someone criticises the discipline of the path, the traditional ways of safeguarding the fire and the guarded nature of the path without having walked and sweated along it with the elders, their position is clear and unwavering.

The elders teach that the need for applause and recognition belongs to the world of illusion. In Maya cosmovision, humanity is not the centre of the universe. It is creation’s younger sibling.

The elders consider it absurd to believe in one’s own importance before the immensity of the jungle, K’áax. The ceiba, the jaguar and the wind do not ask for recognition. They fulfil their purpose in silence. Those who seek to be the centre of attention disrupt the cosmic order and cut themselves off from the living web of nature itself.

For the custodians of the Mayab, criticism of the discipline of the path by those who do not walk it is met with pity. They explain that those who merely theorise and intellectualise from a place of comfort do not possess No’ja’anil, legitimacy. To criticise the rigour of fasting, the silence of the walk or the physical effort is to defend laziness. The ego prefers to discredit discipline rather than submit to it, because discipline breaks pride.

They say that anyone who has not planted the milpa beneath the scorching sun has no right to say how the maize should be harvested. The words of those who criticise without walking carry no weight, álal. They are like dry leaves carried away by the wind.

Those who do not understand the tradition often criticise the elders for guarding their prayers so carefully. They accuse them of being closed and dogmatic. The elders answer that the sacred fire is safeguarded so that it is neither extinguished nor profaned. Ceremonies and prayers carry a real spiritual force, muuk’, that can heal. Yet when used with arrogance or ignorance, this force can bring illness to whoever comes into contact with it. Keeping the path under protection safeguards both the tradition and the novice against their own recklessness.

Knowledge is not given to those who demand it on a whim or in exchange for money. It is entrusted to those who show through their bodies, their patience and their sores that they are worthy of carrying it. To criticise this safeguarding only reveals that a person seeks the power of the path to feed their own name rather than to serve.

There can be no relaxation of vigilance in the discipline of the custodian of the sacred fire, especially in caring for its ashes. The Maya elders warn that the jungle is the most unforgiving judge of the ego. A person may deceive thousands of followers in the modern world with beautiful speeches and theories. Yet when they enter the jungle itself under the guidance of a discipline thousands of years old, the jungle strips away their mask within the first hours. The hunger of fasting, the weariness of walking and the sacred weight of silence eventually break the arrogant. They are compelled either to withdraw or to surrender before the immensity of the mystery. Respecting the custodian’s discipline, protocols, ceremonies, pilgrimages and offerings is not dogmatism. It is essential.

For the Maya elders, the spiritual path is a constant practice of balance. When those who walk it allow the air of pride to cloud their minds, the elders draw upon wisdom thousands of years old. This wisdom rests upon the medicine of the earth and is used to restore purity.

In Maya cosmovision, the aim is not to eradicate the ego through psychological theories. It is to cultivate its complete opposite, Sajkil Óol. This is translated as a clean and transparent heart that walks in sacred fear and respect before the sacred.

The elders say that a clean heart is like the water of an untouched cenote deep within a cave. It holds no mud and seeks no attention. It reflects the sunlight exactly as it is. Those who walk with Sajkil Óol have no need to proclaim their achievements or recount how many days they have fasted. Their very presence radiates a quiet peace.

To have a clean heart is to recognise that a human being is barely a breath within the jungle. When you walk there with this awareness, you understand that you depend entirely upon the will of the spiritual guardians, Yuntzilob, to find water, to avoid stepping on a snake and to return home safely. Accepted with gratitude, this vulnerability destroys every attempt to make oneself important.

Those whose hearts are full of ego listen only to themselves and their own opinions. Those who cultivate Sajkil Óol remain silent because they know that the jungle, the animals and the elders are constantly speaking. For them, true intelligence lies in the capacity to receive rather than the haste to prove oneself.

When someone begins to stray from the path, to seek the applause of others, to break discipline or to criticise the ways in which the path is safeguarded, the elders do not enter intellectual arguments or theological debates. Their teaching is direct and lived through experience. It uses the jungle itself as a mirror.

The first form of correction is to assign the most humble and physically exhausting tasks of the camp or milpa to the arrogant person. They are put to work carrying the heaviest firewood, weeding beneath the midday sun or cleaning the ceremonial utensils after everyone has eaten. If they complain or become indignant, their own anger exposes the resistance of their ego before the community.

If an elder notices that someone speaks too much to make themselves important or to question the teachings with arrogance, the elder simply stops speaking to them. The elder no longer answers their questions or meets their eyes during gatherings around the fire. For the ego, which lives on the attention of others, no punishment is more severe or instructive than the emptiness of a teacher’s complete silence.

If a person’s arrogance is very great, the J-meen will allow them to make a minor mistake along the path. They remain under watch but are allowed to experience the consequences of their carelessness. The J-meen may let them take a wrong route and experience disorientation, or allow the exhaustion of fasting to leave them utterly weakened. When the arrogant person finds themselves lost, thirsty or frightened in the immensity of the night, their pride collapses completely. It is then that the elder intervenes. The purpose is not to humiliate them, but to lift them from the earth and remind them that one enters the jungle on one’s knees and in reverence.

Through these foundations, the elders ensure that the sacred fire is never held by vain hands. They preserve the purity of the lineage and protect those who walk the path from their own spiritual destruction.

For the Maya elders, balance along the path is sacred. Sajkil Óol, the clean heart, is the pillar that sustains those who truly walk it. Correction through the community and the natural world is the traditional remedy for releasing the air of pride.

In Maya cosmovision, no one declares themselves a wise person, healer or custodian. The community grants respect and validates the way a person walks. The ego seeks individual titles. The traditional path calls for the collective gaze.

The elders explain that a person may convince a stranger or a tourist of their supposed spirituality. They cannot deceive the community that sees them wake, work and treat their family day after day. The community observes whether their life is consistent with their words. If their actions do not uphold what they say, the community quietly withdraws its respect.

When someone acts with arrogance, seeks excessive financial gain through medicine or invents ceremonies to feed their sense of importance, the communities of Yucatán do not confront them violently. They simply isolate them. The elders stop inviting them to the milpas. Traditional healers close the doors of their homes to them. The J-meen no longer includes them in the true prayers of Ch’a Cháak. They are left speaking alone within their own illusion.

When the community sees someone who is humble, disciplined and willing to serve without seeking applause, it embraces and supports them. The communal landholders, midwives and elders themselves begin to recommend them by word of mouth. This recognition by the community is the only true diploma in the Mayab.

The elders teach that the rigour of the path has a single purpose. Eleven days on foot while fasting, beneath the sun or in the cold of night, are intended to bring a person to the limit of their physical strength so that their false identity collapses.

When someone with an inflated sense of importance enters the jungle and encounters complete silence, extreme exhaustion and hunger, their social masks fall away. No titles, money or internet followers can save them from their surroundings. In that isolation, the mind begins to project its own fears, guilt and deepest insecurities.

To become frightened of oneself is to realise that one is neither as strong, as wise nor as spiritual as one believed in the comfort of the city. Vulnerable, startled by the cracking of a branch at night or weeping from physical exhaustion, the person confronts their own naked truth. They are frightened to discover the extent of their pride and the emptiness of their criticism of the discipline.

The elders see this breaking as the true beginning of the medicine rather than a failure. They say that the heart is like the earth of the milpa. It must be broken open and turned so that the seed of true teaching can enter. When those who walk the path accept their smallness, wipe away their tears and ask the jungle for permission with sincere humility, the ego gives way to Sajkil Óol. Only in this state of surrender does the jungle allow them to see its secrets.

For the Maya elders, protecting wisdom and the health of the soul takes priority. Knowledge belongs to the jungle and the ancestors rather than to human beings. There are therefore clear ways to protect and heal it when ignorance or pride interfere.

The elders maintain absolute secrecy and continually adapt the ways in which they safeguard sacred prayers, medicinal formulas and words of power. They know that in the hands of someone consumed by their own importance, knowledge becomes a weapon for manipulation or commercial gain.

A Maya teacher will never give you a complete prayer or explain an entire ceremonial procedure in a single sitting. They give you a small part and observe what you do with it. If they see that you rush to boast about it, share it on social media or believe yourself superior, the elder ends the teaching permanently. The full knowledge is revealed only after years of steadfastness, when those who walk the path have shown that their ego no longer seeks to shine.

When arrogant people or academic researchers insist with conceit that they be taught the traditional prayers, the elders often sing or recite altered words. They omit the true names of the spiritual guardians, Yuntzilob, or change the order of the invocations. The novice believes they are taking away the secret, but they carry away an empty shell. Without the transmission of pure intention and the elder’s permission, those words have no muuk’, no spiritual force.

The most closely guarded prayers are not written down. They are passed from mouth to ear in the Maya language. The elders would rather a prayer die with them than entrust it to someone who does not respect the discipline of the path. The fire is passed down only to those capable of safeguarding it in silence and serving as unseen custodians.

For an overview and description of the Mexico–Tibet Bridge Pilgrimage Sites, Veuillez continuer ici.

For teachings about the New Fire Ceremony & Welcoming the New 52 Year Cycle as shared by the Maya Elders, please Cliquez ici.

To read about the Sacred Cenotes and Maya Water Traditions, please Cliquez ici.

To go back to the Mexico–Tibet Bridge Pilgrimage main site, Veuillez cliquer ici.

Pour continuer la lecture sur le Pèlerinage des cendres du mandala de feu universel and pertinent teachings, please Cliquez ici.

Dons

Vous pouvez apporter une aide directe à cet événement en faisant un don à Akhamani.
